A Water-element treat for energy, digestion and holiday balance
Summer in Brisbane can be full of heat, excitement and a bit of overindulgence. From a Chinese medicine perspective, foods that nourish the Water element help restore balance, especially when life speeds up. Black beans are one of these supportive foods. They are valued for gently strengthening the Kidneys, which govern deep vitality, fluid balance and recovery after stress.
These brownies are a perfect example of treating yourself while still looking after your body. They taste rich and chocolatey, yet the base is made from beans, oats and antioxidant-rich cacao. Kids love them and adults are always surprised when they learn what’s inside.
Serve them warm for a soft centre or chilled from the fridge for a firmer bite. Ideal for afternoon tea, lunchboxes or festive gatherings.
Why These Ingredients Support Your Wellbeing
Black Beans
High in plant protein and minerals. Their deep black colour associates them with the Water element in Chinese medicine, supporting Kidney energy and resilience. They help you feel nourished without weighing down digestion.
Cacao
Cacao offers magnesium for calm muscles and a settled nervous system, along with antioxidants to handle daily stress. In Chinese medicine, a touch of bitterness connects cacao with the Heart, helping uplift mood and clear excess heat.
Choosing dark chocolate chips boosts these benefits.
Maple Syrup
A naturally derived sweetener with trace minerals such as manganese and zinc. A little natural sweetness can support the Spleen when balanced with whole foods and protein, helping maintain more stable energy compared to refined sugar.
Oats
Fibre-rich and grounding. Oats support long-lasting energy and are considered Spleen-nourishing in Chinese medicine, making them gentle for digestion and suitable for the whole family.
Ingredients (Makes 16-20 brownies)
- 2 tins (480g) of well-rinsed black beans
- 20g of cocoa powder
- 80g Quick oats
(Rolled oats also work – blend them first – or use gluten-free oats if needed) - ½ tsp fine sea salt
- 150-200g of maple syrup, honey, or agave
- 80g of light olive oil
- 4 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 80g chocolate chips
(Health tip: buy a bar of 70% dark chocolate with a clean ingredient list and cut it into little pieces)
Method
- Preheat your oven to 175°C. Lightly grease or line a 20×20 cm baking dish.
- In a food processor, blend the oats first, then add everything except the chocolate chips until the mixture is completely smooth. Take your time — the smoother the texture, the better the result.
- Fold the chocolate chips through the batter.
- Spread the mixture evenly into the prepared tin and scatter extra chips over the top if desired.
- Bake 16-18 minutes. The surface should look set, even if the centre seems a tiny bit soft.
- Cool in the pan for at least 10–15 minutes before slicing. For even more indulgence (like at Christmas!), you can absolutely add more chocolatey joy by icing the brownies with melted dark chocolate.
Serving Tip
Offer them without mentioning the beans first — most people never guess!
They’re delicious slightly chilled on hot summer days.
